Claiming Back My Tax Rebate

Not sure this is in the right place, apologies if its not.

For part of the previous tax year I was emergency tax after changing jobs, and am due back about £250 - £300 in over payments, however I have phoned countless time and jumped through all their hoops since Christmas and still nothing has arrived!

Has anyone else had problems claiming they're rebates?

They seem quick enough to take it

What year does it relate to ?
What hoops have you jumped through ?
What tax code did you finish the year on ?

A bit more information is required so people can advise what suggest next

  • Are you on the correct Tax Code now?

Did you get a P60 for year 2008/09 from your employer? If so, did you send a copy with a covering letter to the tax office whose address is on the P60?

In answer to the op - yes! My student DD was taxed last year and after a million phone calls, each office passing her over to another, 2 were sent P45 (one a copy), one lost it and failed to respond, the other failed to respond, several calls later has still failed to respond can't read the name of the person who signed for it - she fails security when calling (), when transferred to another office they refuse to disclose which office (), no-one has a clue, no-one cares, she still hasn't had her refund. And all this after filling out the initial form declaring she is a non tax payer. That was ignored too.

Currently filing through complaints. MP next stop.

    OP - good luck:rolleyes:

I would make an appointment to attend at your local tax office. You will need to take two forms of ID, eg a photocard driving licence, and something to prove the home address, eg a household bill or bank statement.
You can then sit down with an advisor and resolve the problems face to face. I would never rely on the HMRC telephone system, it's expensive and very poor service.

HMRC are having an update of their systems right now so do not have access to anyones tax records and can not issue refunds until it is complete. The upshot of this is once it is completed, you can phone your local tax office (as opposed to having to contact the office holding your record which could be anywhere in the UK).

@ LARY, i recently sent in a claim for a rebate for my mother about 2 months ago and got a reply a few days ago to say a cheque will be issued. It would have been done sooner but I left out one tiny little detail so they had to send me a letter to confirm it. This is roughly the amount of time it would normally take so if you have been waiting since xmas, I think there is something wrong. Just wondering what tax year you are saying you have overpaid tax for? is it 07/08?

Did you send a letter requesting a rebate or just do it over the phone? If it was just over the phone, then its possible the opperator you spoke to didn't do their job properly, or the request got lost somewhere in the system.

Also are you sure you have overpaid tax? being put onto emergency tax when changing jobs doesn't always result in an overpayment of tax. If you are comfortable with it, you could post your gross pay and tax taken and we can check.

I applied for my refund of emergency tax (from 3 separate jobs) by post, after originally ringing them up for advice, and I had the cheque within 2 weeks. This was at the end of May.

I had to send my original P45's, and P60, plus covering letter.
