Referencing

just out of curiosity, what type of questions are asked in a reference?

Am I correct in thinking that all they want to confirm is dates of employment and that you arent lying about having worked for them?

Thanks :j

Could also be asked about a persons performance, attendance, i think the basic thats required is dates of employment and that you did actually work for said firm

    could be wrong

what i meant was if you left (as in handed your notice in) or were dismissed, didn't pass your probation or just walked out - can they state this?

    anyone? :)

Yes they can. If the new employer asks.

Yes they can ask. Usually though they ask this to the applicant under the "Reason for leaving" section on a application form.

The basic rule of a reference is that the requesting organisation can ask what they want. Different employers have their own policies about what they say. Some employers will merely state dates and position held. Others will go into lots of detail.

Opinion is divided on the boards about which is the best way to go, however most of us agree that they can state what they like on a reference as long as its true (ie not opinion) and can be backed up evidence.

Don't mean to sound preacing, but if there is some history that you don't want your new employer to find out, honesty is the best option.
