How to get ingrained stains off old bathtub?

Our house was built in the 1950s, and I think it still has the original bathtub. It's a white tub, but unfortunately it is very stained (was like that when we moved in), and looks horribly grubby even just after being cleaned. I've tried using various bathroom cleaner sprays, as well as bleach, but they don't make much of an impact on the stains (I also felt a bit bad about using them, since I normally try to stick with more environmentally friendly products).
We'll be getting a new bathroom suite eventually, but not for a couple of years yet, and I really don't want to have to live with such a 'dirty' looking tub in the meantime.
Anyone have any suggestions for getting rid of the stains?
thanks

Cif is good for scrubbing off stains
How about filling the bath with water and stirring in some biological washing powder and leaving in overnight?
Grotbuster is a very thick bleach that did a lot of good in our very grubby bathroom when we moved in here but I did nearly pass out from the fumes, so watch out.

Hi MoneyMagnet,
This earlier thread has some ideas which may help:
Stained Bath
I'll add your thread to that one later to keep the suggestions together.

Thanks Patchwork Quilt for the suggestions - I'll try the washing powder one first - will be nice & easy it that works!
Pink-winged - thanks for the link - I did do a search before posting, but must have overlooked that one! I'll have a read through now.

Hi there
Could it just be that it's not really dirt as such, just old dirtly looking enamel? You can get kits I think from DIY stores to paint on your old enamel bath to give it a new lease of life.

Thanks Primula - yes, I guess it could be. I'm not 100% sure what it's made from, but I guess I can find out. If the cleaning tips don't work, I'll look into the kits you suggest!0
