need help re mackenzie hall/merit force

morning all
was wondering if anyone can help.
Last year oh recieved a letter from machenzie hall saying he had an outstanding debt with singlepoint for 314.66.
Now singlepoint have changed to vodaphone so we went into the shop and they had no record of him ever having a phone with them and also through the call centre they have no record.
We wrote to mackenzie hall asking for a copy of a signed credit agreement which they havnt provided.
Today he recieved a letter from meritforce stating that they debt had been passed to them and if we didnt contact them in 10 days a collector will call at the door.
Does anyone have any advice on what to do, he is at work all day and I dont fancy a collector turning up when im on my own with the kids.
Any help appreciated
Beki

  • Either send the In dispute letter, from the standard letters thread (#8) or why not just send the "Prove it" letter? (#3)

    Hi

I received a letter from Response Credit Management back in March stating that I owed Mackenzie Hall (Singlepoint) £329.54. I wrote back telling them I didn't know what this was for and could they enlighten me. They responded that they would go back to the client. I heard nothing more until today. I received a letter from Merit Force telling me an agent would be calling at my house unless I paid in full by Friday. I have just phoned Merit force and spoken to the most rude, obnoxious, moronic woman ever who spoke ot me as if I was a child who was completely stupid. The debt apparently dates back to a mobile phone contract I took out in January 2001 although I have absolutely no recollection and told her as much. She advised me that I had been sent numerous amounts of correspondence and that I was pretty much lying by saying that I had lived at my address since that time and had received nothing and that the client wanted immeditae payment. When she was unprepared to listen to me and kept speaking over me I lost my temper (which I'm not proud of) and told her not to be so ______ rude and hung up. Once I had calmed 2 or 3 minutes later I phoned again to seek details of Singlepoint to deal with them directly, I was then advised by a nice chap that the case had been closed. I asked him to clarify that the case had been closed and that I would be notified in writing and he confirmed that that would be the case. I know it isn't the way to deal with things but I think perhaps they were just chancing their arm and realised I wasn't going to roll over and play dumb. Watch this space for the confirmation that they willnow leave me alone!!
  • I've just got a letter through from McKenzie Hall this morning demanding payment of a Singlepoint account for around £400 and advising that if payment is not made then a doorstep visit will be made shortly.

The debt originates from 2002 and MH told me that all they have is the amount outstanding and no reason how it came to be. The agent I spoke to speculated that perhaps it was due to a line rental that was never cancelled. This is logical and makes sense and since I originally changed lines back in 2002 with Phones4U (the high street store) I wonder if they made some kind of oversight and never cancelled the old contract for me.

Still, the debt is now 7 years old and no one can tell me where the debt comes from precisely including Vodafone who I have just rang and who no record of me (probably because of the time that has elapsed.)

I wonder if anyone can advise on this?

    Hi

Phone accounts are not usually covered by the Consumer Credit Act.

But a debt which you have not paid in the last 6 years, nor acknowledged in wrting is statute barred.

Send the standard Statute barred letter as until you do this, they are entitled to ask you for the money. Once you send that, they are breaking the rules pursuing a disputed debt and another DCa has been put in special measures for the same antics.
If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing
  • Thank you so much for your answer.

Do you happen to have a link to the statute barred letter? I searched on here but nothing seemed to come up...

    Hi darkdante1,

You're the third person I've come across on here today who've been contacted by Mackenzie Hall. Could you email us by following the instructions in this thread?

Beki and gemsln, have your queries been resolved?

If not, could you do the same as darkdante1?

    Thanks,

    Lee

  • I have been receiving text messages from MeritForce to urgently contact Dan at Mackenzie Hall. Nothing concrete at all. I would not normally go by anything that I receive in text for this sort of issue and would only respond to anything that was in writing. Should I contact them? I have not received a single letter.

I have had around 10 such messages over the past year with exactly the same wording and information in each. They seem to come in spurts as well. First time I received 5 in the same week. Now I have received a similar number of 2 weeks.

I dont want to get involved in anything if it is a scam? From what it appears above it is to do with telephone contract debts and I have never had a telephone contract. What should I do?
