New to this.. where do we start?

Hi all..
there are so many posts and info I don't know where to start! My OH went to the CAB the other day and he was advised to go bankrupt, and we have some forms to start filling in. Am I right that I should start by getting child benefit etc paid by Giro.. when should we open a cash account.. and he's been told it has to be joint account.. is this right? ( We are both going BR)
Will it affect our tenancy with the council?
Will it affect my son's Uni student loans etc?
What should I do about my mobile.. should I cancel it now and get a PASUG phone?
We have one working car between us, which i use to get to work( part-time).. are they likely to want that from us?
Is it likely that the Gas & Electric will want to swap us to key meters.. even though we don't get into debt with them?
Do they inform our employers.. is it likely to affect my job in a supermarket?
I know these seem like small questions, but my mind is swimming with it all at the moment!
The last thing I want is for it to affect my sons at uni, which worries me.. it's not their fault.
Advice on where to get all questions like this answewred and how it all works/happens would be good please!
Thank you

no question is too small to ask , good luck !Hi all..

Am I right that I should start by getting child benefit etc paid by Giro.. when should we open a cash account.. and he's been told it has to be joint account.. is this right? ( We are both going BR) usually it is advise to open a bank account with the co op a or barclays after your bankruptcy order as the OR will have no access but many people have open a bank account before hand and told the oR that was to receive your wage and pay your bill after your BR
Will it affect our tenancy with the council? i am not sure too depend if you have a BR clause but i if you are not in aqrrear then dont worry too much.
Will it affect my son's Uni student loans etc? no it will not affect your son student loan at all
What should I do about my mobile.. should I cancel it now and get a PASUG phone? not too sure about this
We have one working car between us, which i use to get to work( part-time).. are they likely to want that from us? too depend of you OR and the value of your car
Is it likely that the Gas & Electric will want to swap us to key meters.. even though we don't get into debt with them? no some company swap to meter when some BR had build up debt with them so if you have nto then you wont . .
Do they inform our employers.. is it likely to affect my job in a supermarket? npo they dont inform the employer however if you work in a FSA regulated job then you may have a problem.BSC number 1830 -
Hi all..

First of all phone your local County Court to see what system they operate and how long you will have to wait for an appointment.
Am I right that I should start by getting child benefit etc paid by Giro.. You can ask them to put it on hold, but I don't think you can get a giro for CB, ot that could be child tax credits, sorry can't remember which.
when should we open a cash account.. and he's been told it has to be joint account.. is this right? ( We are both going BR) No you don't have to have a joint account, you can have separate accounts if you want, or both even. You can open a basic bank account with either Co-op or Barclays (as long as you don't live in Brighton, and start using it now.
Will it affect our tenancy with the council? No
Will it affect my son's Uni student loans etc? No.
What should I do about my mobile.. should I cancel it now and get a PASUG phone? That's up to you, if you want out of the contract you can cancel it and it will be included in your BR, if it's not a huge monthly payment you will be allowed to keep it.
We have one working car between us, which i use to get to work( part-time).. are they likely to want that from us? That will depend on how much it is worth. If it's worth less than £2k and is needed for work you should be able to keep it.
Is it likely that the Gas & Electric will want to swap us to key meters.. even though we don't get into debt with them? No, if you have no debt it will carry on as normal.
Do they inform our employers.. is it likely to affect my job in a supermarket? No, and no.
I know these seem like small questions, but my mind is swimming with it all at the moment!
The last thing I want is for it to affect my sons at uni, which worries me.. it's not their fault.

Re Child benefit and Tax credits.
Tax credits will arrange for you to have payment by Cheque which can be paid into an account or cashed at the postoffice. It can take up to 30 days for them to make this change so best ring them sooner rather than later.
Child Benefit. Will not do this over the telephone and you have to put the reason in writing to them. I have done this today as cited financial hardship as my bank account will be frozen as I will be unable to access it (planning for future BR) Let me know if you need address.
You can also ask either tax credits or child benefit for a Post office card account invitation letter which means you can open an account which is soley for benefits and tax credit. I have also asked both to send me an invite doc (asked both as will use whichever one I get first) I was advised on my thread that the OR will not freeze Post office card account.0 -
I opened a Co-op account several months before I finally decided to go bankrupt and had (and still have) my child benefit and tax credits paid into there. There's been no problems at all - only thing that has happened is the Co-op closed the Savings account I had with them.BR 08/06/09 ED 10/03/10BSC member 2500

if you are thinking to open one with barclays open one now as it takes a bit of tiem to open one with them ..... don't do it like i did open it on the day of your Br and then wait a month and a half with no bank account d'oh due to snail mail !BSC number 1830

Thank you for all the replies

the thing is, I had a Barclays Credit card, and am paying them off at a fixed amount( or was!) though a debt collection agency.
Does this mean i shouldn't open an account with Barclays?
The nearest co-op is far too far away to travel to
The CAB gave us a list of cash only accounts, and Halifax, and HSBC were listed.. and thoughts?

My Co-op is a considerable trek too but I can access it on line or through any post office so thats why I picked it. I had a debt with one of the companies Barclay's took over so didn't want to chance it. Also the Halifax frooze my account before the OR even told them - they saw the details in the London Gazette.BR 08/06/09 ED 10/03/10BSC member 2500 -

Hi Minx,
One of my creditors was Barclaycard I also had a current account with barclays bank - post BR Barclays (Bank) wrote to inform me my account would be frozen shortly, however they gave me the option of opening a new 'basic' account with them
They are BR friendly.
I haven't taken that option (even though my branch is local to where I live & my account was in credit when I went BR - £4.00)Instead I opened a Co-op Cashminder account on the day I went BR - personally I wanted a new account, I told the OR what I had done & he said they had no interest in it as I was post BR. This enabled me to change my DD's over immediately rather than worry about my Barclays account being frozen first & foremost & then having to open a 'new'account if you see what I mean
My Co-op branch isn't local but you can pay monies in at the P.O & withdraw cash as well so if anything I've found it easier than before as the banks locally tend to open after I've gone to work in the morning & close before I finish work in the afternoon!

Hi Minxz
I too am with Coop....btw just got my new visa debit card (with raised numbers !! )...its the little things that matter sometimes
:D
Anyway....go onto website & there is a telephone number to open over the phone. It was really quick & easy too. Their online banking is so much easier than I used at my old bank.

Edit...forgot to say...good luck with the forms.0
