BR tax code for new job, how do I get off it?

On my first paycheck in my new job I have been taxed with the 'BR w1/m1' code which I've just found on the hmrc site in horror :D This is the first money I've earned in this tax year though I was claiming jobseekers from dec 08 - may 09. I left my previous job in july 08.

How do I get onto my proper tax code? And will I get the tax back in later paychecks once it's sorted?

Sorry to be so clueless, any help appreciated :)

Did you hand in the P45 that you got from Jobseeker's? This is why you have been put on a BR code.

If you haven't received it yet the alternative is to complete a P46. Until you do either of these you will remain on a BR code.

Once you get that done and your proper code is issued you will get an automtaic rebate.

I'm having exactly the same problem at the moment. I stupidly handed in a P45 from a brief stint of working last year, instead of completing the P46.

The solution is to complete the P46 and give that to your employer asap, and just in case it's too late for them to action it, I would also ring the Tax office and inform them that this is your only job this year.

The tax office have told me they will accept this info over the phone, but won't take the info until next week as they are undergoing a nationwide systems upgrade at the moment and right now all they can do is 'read' accounts, not amend them.
