I know alot of us have recently got Yorkshire Building Society accounts and although i dont have a lot i say what i can being on JSA so i can have cash for rainy days and for fuel for the first month when i finally get a job.
Tonight i added some funds to the account and saw that the 46p interest that i earned went out to Charity mmmmmmmm whats that about i thought so i called YBS. The lady was lovely on the phone and pointed out that you get all round pounds and any pence goes to charity but you can take it off not i know i am going to sound a little mean but at the moment every pennie counts so i have taken it off. I do a little work for a local charity so i dont feel that bad but just beware of this in case you are not happy with that as i never saw this mentioned anywhere.
Dont worry though as on the phonethey are great about it.

I've just noticed this, so I phoned them up for an explanation.
The guy was fine, he said it is explained up front when you open the account, and that I probably just missed it.
I probably did. He said they only do it once a year, and since I get interest every month, I didn't think it was bad, so I left it be.
Thinking on, I do remember seeing some spiel about charidy when I opened the account, and I probably thought it was something to do with giving windfall benefits away in the event of a de-mutualisation within the first five years of being an account holder (like the Derbyshire do).0
