Reclaiming Tax After Moving Abroad

Hi All

I was hoping for some help ;-) ..pretty please

I left the UK and started a new job in Germany on 01SEP2008. I found out that I could maybe reclaim some tax back ..hopefully

My P45 details when leaving the UK are:
Total Pay to date £12,283.50
Total tax to date £ 2,021.60
Tax Code 521L
Would someone be able to tell me how much I could expect back? This was my total earnings in the UK for the 2008 Financial year? Would I be entitled to all the tax back (2,021.60) as I know there is a minimum or something which is tax free?
Also, I'm not too late to claim back am I?
Any help most welcome!
Thanks
Steve

Did you complete a P85 - http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/cnr/p85.pdf - when you left the UK. The answers you give on that will help HMRC determine how much of a refund if any you are eligible for.

    Hi Fengirl

    Thanks for the reply

I don't plan at coming back to the UK. I've been a resident in Germany since leaving the UK. I'm going backpacking in September for a while with the the view of coming back to Germany and not UK if a choice out of the two.

About the second part regarding how my 08-09 code was made up, i honestly don't know what you mean? I always left this up to the company HR dept...never really paid any notice to tax things..all i knew was that the taxman liked my money! ;-)

    Anymore questions please ask

    Cheers

    Hi Pam17

That's what I'm planning to do next..fengirl told me about that in a previous post..thanks. I was asking here as now I got the figures of my P45 and was just seeing if someone could give me a rough guest-imate.

I'm going backpacking so would have been nice to know...it was just this tax-free allowance thing made we wonder if it would be a nice sum to take on the road.

    Thanks

Your code number includes some other source of income, or an underpayment for a previous year, which is why I asked. Not really possible to be accurate about the refund due without this info, but it will be about £610.

But we still don't know where you are domiciled, if you are not UK domiciled you only get the personal allowance by reporting worldwide income.

Domicile isn't an issue here. As you left the UK part way through the tax year and you appear to be intending to stay out of the UK for a full tax year you will have given up your UK tax residency. As Pam 17 says you should fill out a P85. From your tax code you didn't have straightforward tax affairs perhaps you had some benefits in kind such as a company car or healthcare. You won't get all the tax back, I would say Fengirl's estimate is about right, possibly a bit more but no more than £700. From your taxcode it looks like

    Thanks a lot guys!!!

TM1976, I did have private healthcare. £610 sounds great, happy with less too. It was actually money I didn't know about and will help with the backpacking!

    Many Thanks
