Hmmmmm!! Funnily enough we bought ours on Tuesday too so I guess it must be the same batch? I'm going to try the sugar thing anyway as I really hope it isn't the flour - we /did/ stock up!0

Just thought I'd post the results. Made a third loaf with more sugar. It was a brick that had...sunk? I don't see how it could have sunk because it still hadn't risen at all. So it was less than a brick, really. Astoundingly bad. Bought some Tesco stoneground wholemeal and tried it. Risen perfectly with 1/2 tsp salt, 1/2 tsp sugar. So I guess it was the flour batch from Sainsbury's.0

Just found this page. It has little pictures of bread loaf "mishaps" and the possible reasons for these mistakes alongside.
(according to the site) It sounds like the warm weather is allowing the yeast to rise too quickly so that it collapses by baking time. Suggestions for this include using colder water and baking at a cooler part of the day.
It's nice to see some of my mishaps on there.
Just read you had baked a successful loaf today. Is it cooler with you today?
It's only a game
