I appreciate the problems you must have in this sector. Call Centres and factories have a massive turnover as the work is so mind-numbing and demoralising, it's hard to keep even the desperate interested in doing this kind of work. You also tend to have to deal with more 'difficult' job seekers.

On the whole, however, for better jobs, agencies are useless, discriminating and the staff are usually graduates who couldn't get a job anywhere else. Or people like our ex-admin assistant, thick as two short planks, who left our company to become a recruitment consultant. It turns my blood cold to think that she, or someone like her, might have the final say on if I was put forward for a position or not.
I'll have some cheese please, bob.

When I have phoned the agencies concerned about these vacancies, they simply say that they have not updated their records, or that the post is "On hold" at the moment.

Reed is excellent for this. Was on yesterday and found a semi-interesting position. Within 6 pages, I had found that same advert three times. God knows how old it was! they have multiple, identical ads, so when it says over a hundred jobs were found for your search, I would read this as 30 original jobs.

I'm having such a rant this morning as my agency just aren't ars*d at all in these times, where they would treat me like Roylty if times were good. I hope mine go bust.

At the start of last year when I was looking for a job the reed website was quite helpful and i usually got phonecalls/emails from other emplyers/agencys from it (even though they usually offered me things that were unsuitable or required a car).

This time not only is it filled with repeat adverts, it is full of 'fake' jobs. When I looked thismorning it had atleast 10 different positions advertised for a dodgy sales company media circus and GE Marketing. They usually run something along the lines of "new city office open...20 new graduate managment positions to be filled..imediate start etc', and are almost always some sort of comission based scam.

Also lots of fishy looking train to be an IT consultant/ Personal trainer/etc where you have to take out a loan from the company to pay for your training.

Never understood the multiple same job adverts for different area's of the country.....

What exactly do they gain from doing this?
Any of our resident agents care to elaborate?

The Reed website is horrendous now. It used to be quite good, now I don't even bother looking at it - Full of crap.

Monster is only good for uploading your CV so agencies/employers can find it. Searching for jobs on the site is a pain and there are never that many.

Jobcentreplus has more 'real' jobs, but agencies have still polluted the site. The search function is the worst ever.

Jobsite is still okay and some of the lesser known sites.

I search a lot on jobs.ie and it's full on '20 Managers Required Immediately' type jobs or jobs that just don't seem to exist. Jobcentre plus is full of the same telesales job in Sunderland with an agency that Ive never heard of.

Overall though, I don't think agencies are as bad as everyone makes out. Yes you get your utter idiots who are a waste of space but you can also get some really good people who go out of their way to help you.
  • personality has nothing whatsoever to do with a job.I have had several jobs including being an officer in the navy and lately working in a computer company. No matter where I go there is ALWAYS at least one person that 'I do not get along with' - I use my professionalism to work alongside this person regardless,so that it does not affect my work.As to teamwork, this is often overstated and I much prefer to work at my own initiative (not in the navy), since from my experiences teamwork often consisted of correcting my team members mistakes.

As to Agency's.They should be abolished, along with foot soldiers armed with 20th century metal detectors in afghanistan.Bring on Arnolds autonymous robots powered with fuel cells and maybe 10,000 helicopter gunships equipped with hellfire misiles.
  • they say that if you can't do the job become a teacher. If you can't be a teacher, become an 'agency consultant'
