Hope this is the right board - here goes
Friends of my husband's ( not of mine) are telling everyone that they have declared themselves to be tax exiles to save £70K of tax, but they've never left the country. He's run one company down and is getting people who owe that company to pay third parties or another company that he has set up. She is sending flyers out for a new business she has started - and they are not even supposed to be here!
It's been worrying me for months. I've talked to someone I trust this morning and she says I should report them. What does anyone else think?
This is blatant tax avoidance and it makes me very uncomfortable.

If it's worrying you then report them.0

Personally, i would mind my own business,
they will get caught up with at some stage.
What does your husband say?make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
I've been in a similar situation and I didn't do anything. It bothered me for a lot longer than I care to admit, and although I can't tell you what I think you should do it's my opinion - being greatly older and perhaps a little wiser - that if a situation is bothering you then you should take steps to rectify it, whatever it takes. You may find that the solution is worse than the problem, but it's all knowledge and you'll know for next time!

They are bragging complete rubbish and you wonder whether you should report them?
I suspect the tax office will spot the flaw in their plan i.e. not leaving the country without any assitance from you.
Why not look and see someone that you could help or benefit rather than someone, who admittedly sounds unpleasant, that you want to try and destroy? I am not worrying about them, I am worrying about the effect of doing this on your soul/ conscience/ karma.0 -
It is compete rubbish as the tax office will have access to the information on who enters and leaves the country and on what dates. Also no one is going to pay money they owe to a third party company as they will simply wait for the original company to go into liquidation.0

Thank you all for an intersting cross section of views.
Nexuss - if HMRC really do know who is going in and out then I don't need to worry - they will get caught out anyway. You would be surprised though who has agreed to a request along the lines of 'I owe so and so so much, so rather than pay me, will you pay him and then that saves me the bother of making a payment.' Mad and dangerous I know but people do it because the man is plausible.
Pee - interesting comment re karma...I saw it completely the other way round.
off to think about things
Thanks again

In an ideal situation, yes, they should be reported. While HMRC will pick this up eventually, it could be many years before this happens. However, not every situation is ideal, and you're probably thinking to yourself, what will they do if they found out what I've done. If you don't care about this, then go ahead and report them.

Mrs P....
No question at all, you shoud report them immediatly and your report is totally confidential.
Many reports are made and the 'baddies' will never know who it was that reported them. By contactiong the tax office they will gve you a number to contact and you will have done a good service to the country as well as standing up for honesty.
What a great pity those who say ignor it are only showing themselves up as not caring enough about fraud, possibly would do the same given the chance?.
We all pay far to many taxes now and part of that is through crooks that take advantage of others, like you and me, as well as political figures taking advantage of expenses loopholes.
Do a good deed and report them so that it can be investigated. With any luck, they may be sent back to the country they are saying they are now in!!!

Friends of your husband's who tell everyone they're tax exiles are blatantly stupid and even if you don't I would bet someone else gets envious and reports them.
Whether to report them or not is something for your conscience.
Finally, sorry to be pedantic but they appear to be committing tax evasion. Tax avoidance is legal. If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales0
