Tax Return

I was made br in dec 2008, I received today a tax return, I havent been self employed since October 06. I rang the tax office and they said I have it because I am br. I told them I am employed and have been while br and not self employed.
Anyone else experienced this.

  • Yes good, over half way now for me, husband has done 4 months, both of us are with RTLU now.

I rang the tax office today and they said that I have to fill the tax return in and print off the supplementary pages as I am employed. What i cannot understand is why because surely they will know what I have earnt, I have searched the forum for anyone else experiencing this but cannot find anything. I owed them 660 pounds from when I was self employed in 2006, but that was added to my creditors list. Does anyone know if I am opening up a can of worms sending this back or is it routine.

  • Thanks Dalip.

Any advice most welcome, surely I cannot be the only one to ever receive one in bankruptcy. Can I just ignore it or should I tell OR.

Funnily enough we got loads of tax returns for ages afetr we had stopped being self employed. I had phned the tax office repeatedly to tell them we were not self employed but were now both employees and paying PAYE.

Surprise surprise the returns kept coming and eventually I just showed on in another envelope and said on it "stop sending these things - as you will see from your records we are PAYE and have been for the last two years."

That did the trick (i hope)

  • Did you have anything written on the top of yours, something like b4 year, couldnt really read their writing. At first the tax office couldnt understand why I had received it, then when I said that was at the top he said that as I am br I have to complete it. But I am not self employed and I told him that, I employed and have been since oct 06. What should I do?

i was self employed when i went bankrupt in 04 - was allowed to keep my business as it was only 3 months old and v small! i started full time employment in oct last year, so have had to fill in a return this year obviously due to half a year of being s/e. sounds like they may have confused your dates!

i would fill in the s/e anyway, 0 earnings from self employment, x amount from employment? at the same time call and write to your local tax office and inform them when your s/e ceased again.

usually this is a case of left arm not speaking to right arm ime,

As well as self employed and directors, HMRC also pick so many thousand 'normal' PAYE employees to do tax returns - just in case they pick up on something.

Don't ignore it, whatever you do!! HMRC will issue you with a fine come Jan 10 and its not returned!!

HMRC send out tax returns for a number of reasons, but also just because they can; your BR is probably a coincidence. Are you on a nil tax code??
  • I was on nil tax code from dec 08 to april 09, now I am back to normal and having tax deducted. I received a letter ages before going br to say that I did not need to fill tax returns in anymore, they knew I had ceased being self employed and that I was now employed. I have printed off the supplementary pages for employment, I take it I just put the figures from my 08-09 earnings, send it back to them and will that be the end of it. Still a little unnerved as to why I got it.
