Need a Laptop - £400 budget

Options
Hi, can anyone recommend a decent laptop for up to £400? I tried reading through the dell thread but sort of got lost after 8 pages!

Cheers,

Nick.

What about this one, available from Woolworths for £399.99 (makes a change from Dell all day, eh? ;) )

If you are looking for a cheap laptop you might want to check out Averetec. They make good portable laptops at v. good prices. I bought an Averetec 3270 last year from Misco for just over £500 - Pentium M 1.3, 512mb RAM, 80gb hardrive, 12.1" screen, DVD RW. I've been impressed with it would definitely recommend it over Dell.
  • This one from ebuyer gets great reviews from those who bought it. good spec for the price compared to most

How easy is it to upgrade the 256mb ram to say 512mb or even 1gig ram on the above laptops?

    Nick.

  • there will be a slot on the bottom which unscrews revealing the card. simply take out the memory and slot in the new one.

ram is one of the few things that can easily be upgraded in a laptop, and they are designed to make it easy for you, provided that you have the correct replacement memory card.

finding which is compatible memory is very straighforward - putting the laptop model into a search engine on a shop selling the memory will give you what is compatible (one off the top of my head is https://www.crucial.com) and, of course, this means that you can return it free, no problem if it turns out to be wrong

EDIT: upgrading ram will really help with performance. my advice with a laptop is - within your price band, get the best spec you can afford for things that arent upgradable in a laptop, such as the processor speed and unshared graphics memory. extra hard disk memory and ram memory can be upgraded later when you can afford it

They are good, but watch out, they do charge if you pay by a credit card (which I would recommend if you buy something as expensive as a computer)
