The PCMCIA/CardBus solution will be easiest, assuming your laptop has a PCMCIA or CardBus slot, of course... quite a few models don't. Here's another couple to consider: http://www.ebuyer.com/product/60611 (may require external power from another USB port or an AC adapter) and http://www.ebuyer.com/product/62233 (appears to not require external power). External power is only required if you want to connect a device with higher power requirements.
In terms of fixing the original USB ports:
You should be able to download the service manual for your model of laptop from the manufacturer. This will tell you exactly how to dismantle it and put it back together.
The service manual is unlikely to be very helpful about actually soldering the USB ports, as the manufacturer's official "solution" to this problem will almost certainly be to replace the entire motherboard.Let's settle this like gentlemen: armed with heavy sticks
On a rotating plate, with spikes like Flash Gordon
And you're Peter Duncan; I gave you fair warning0
