I tried this. The prices were the same as using thetrainline but the only available fares to book were the more expensive ones. Eg with trainline I booked 2 singles to London (from Manchester ) at 12.50 each. although they were showing on the above site, they weren't bookable. the cheapest bookable one was a daily saver at £57.

There's a discount card you can apply for on the midland mainline site but it is not very well publicised. It is called the more card.
