Three Bean Salad

I bought a bowl of salad bits for my granddaughter yesterday in Sainsbobs and as it was one of those help-yourself type of bars she chose a bit of everything .One of the ingredients was a three bean salad, and she absolutely loved it.As she has been very helpful to me this week mowing my lawn and weeding, I thought I would make her a big bowl of it .Surfing the net it seems the only receipes are American ones which all seem to use beans that I have never heard of and most of them are tinned, and would be unlikely to be able to buy in rural North Kent does any kind person on here have a quick and easy one that I could make for her, I have a fairly large Tesco's close by or Sainsbobs.I have never made this before, so a receipe would be much appreciated
Cheers :j

Hi Jackie. What beans were in the salad? I make one with mixed beans and it generally consists of any dried beans I feel like soaking. My OH prefers it with flageolet, cannellini, black eyed beans and cooked french beans.
I cook them as usual, allow to cool and mix with chopped red onion and french dressing.

Jackie....the Americans have different names for beans to ours on this side of the Atlantic...I can never remember which is which so can't 'translate' a recipe for you.

I make 3 bean salad with equal quantities of butter, haricot and red kidney beans, soaked and cooked separately, remembering to boil kidney beans hard for 10 minutes. I then drain and while still warm add some olive oil, lots herbs...I usually use parsley or thyme, as much garlic as you like...as you will see I am not very exact, would advise that you fiddle around until you get it to your liking

If you want something like the one your daughter had , buy a few tins of sainsburys mixed beans , make a vinegrette dressing and bobs you aunt sally.

Hi, same as the Dr... I usually just use a tin of mixed beans from sainsburys, then add in some chopped pepper, tomato, onion sometimes a small tin of sweetcorn as well and some dressing.

Cheers chums its given me a few ideas.By the way the 2.99 salad bowl was excellent value as there were about 15 different bits and pieces you could cram in there including some coronation chicken. It was quite a big bowl and my one did me for two meals at least .Katie wolfed hers down in one go bless her, but she had just mowed my lawn in the sizzling heat.

I just found this one in the culinary library. It looks nice and simple, but I haven't scaled it down or tested it yet.

    THREE BEAN SALAD

    Serves 4 to 6

    INGREDIENTS

    400g tin of baked beans
    400g tin of chick peas
400g tin of red kidney beans
    1 tablespoon of lemon juice
    2 tablespoons of oil

    1 teaspoon of dried parsley

    METHOD

Open the tin of baked beans. Open the tins of chick peas and red kidney beans, and drain off the liquid.

Put the baked beans, chick peas, red kidney beans, lemon juice, oil and parsley into a bowl. Mix thoroughly.

Keep in the fridge for the flavours to mix, and until ready to eat.

    ADDITIONS & ALTERNATIVES

Use flageolet beans instead of the chick peas. Use butter beans instead of the red kidney beans.
The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in my life. :)

Not sure I fancy cold baked beans _pale_. Reminds me too much of my student days. :D

I know what you mean. I wondered about them. They're good for you, though: high in fibre, low in fat, one of your five a day, etc.

If anyone can come up with a workable alternative for them and the sauce, I will add it to the recipe, and maybe even make the baked beans the alternative.

I'd forget about the cold bean sauce altogether and use cannellini beans instead but that's just me. Like I say, my recipe is just french dressing with the beans and red onion and maybe some chopped basil and parsley.;) When you say you haven't tested it does that mean you haven't tried it?
