Photographs, advice needed!

I seem to be asking loads of questions on here this week, very quickly becoming obsessed with this site on my week off!

I have been given totally free choice on whatever I want by my photographer...he said whatever I want he can quote me a price for. Thing is...I haven't a clue WHAT I want lol. I know people will say that the photographer should be the one giving me options but I just don't want to come across totally clueless and would like to know the kinds of things I need to consider.

So far the only choice I have made is that I want coverage starting from getting ready to the evening reception which he said is fine...but I don't know what kinda of choices I will need to make in terms of albums, styles etc. Any good websites that will explain the options available or could somone fill me in?

I should also add that my photographer is a family friend, hasn't set up the photography as a business yet but the examples of his work I have seen have been very impressive. He is offering me a great price (will be under £500 for coverage, ownership & digital images as well as an album) and said that the reason I have some much choice is because he just does this as a side project at the moment so is able to cater to whatever I want.

Do you want family groups - these are static posed (traditional photographs) or reportage (this is where the photographer snaps away throughout the day taking natural pictures of people) or a mixture of both so you can have some posed photographs and the rest can be au-naturale.

I got a photography supplement with a wedding magazine a while back which listed all of the common wedding photos. The idea was then that you could tick what you wanted to make it easier discussing things with your photographer...

Not sure if anyone has an online link for you to anything like this...?

  • Wow thanks for the quick replies, I hadn't even considered the style of the pictures! Thanks for that link MF, that looks really helpful.

What do I need to consider in terms of the album?

Thanks for that link *MF*, has given me some good ideas of pics I would like to include & is safely in my 'wedding faves!

Even though our wedding isn't till Sept 2011, I've started looking at booking photograher now, as the one who I found & liked is already booked for our date :( Didnt think I'd have to worry about this for about a year! I guess not!!!

The albums I've come across so far are either the traditional style or the storybook reportage style... apart from that I'm still researching so not much help.... sorry!

  • This is what my Brides typically ask for..

    Getting ready shots
Guests arriving at church or venue (candid stuff)
    Groom with groomsmen before ceremony
    Bride arriving
Maybe some posed stuff before entering the church or venue?
The ceremony (do you want a shot set up of the signing of the register? Some do some dont - is photography allowing at the church or venue?)
    Confetti shot
Group shots (decide who you want in them and dont make the list too long!)
Bride and Groom alone - where would you like them? Is there the option to go somewhere picturesque? Have you built in time for this when planning your day?
Details of the day - flowers, wedding rings, order of service, cufflinks etc etc
    Speeches
Candid shots of guests enjoying themselves
    Cutting of the cake
    First dance

However the most important choice I think is the album. Do you want a digital album (photos printed on to hard pages) or a traditional matted album (photos behind mats or frames on a page). The album designs are important IMO as they can make lovely photos look so dated!

It all works out good in the end.
If it's not good, it's not the end!
