I'm desperate for help!
My twin boys aged 13 are performing in 1970's themed Charity night on friday night and I cannot afford to buy any costumes. I kept asking them if I needed me to try and pick up some bits n pieces to make an outfit but they said they didn't know what they needed. Now 3 days to go and they've told me that their friends are all hiring costumes at a minimum cost of £20 for flares, shoes & wigs and buying shirts etc etc. I simply cannot justify that as a spend.
I want them to look great and usually I'm not short of ideas but I haven't got a clue where to start on this.
I have a sewing machine and should probably go to the charity shops for a rummage. I've freecycled a request and looked on Ebay.
I'd welcome any helpful suggestions,
thanks

The simplest idea might be to make them both into Danny from Grease - black trousers, black shoes, white socks and a plain white T shirt (which you might have already,or be able to borrow). Gel their hair into the right style. If you could get hold of a couple of black bomber-jackets from a charity shop, that would be perfect - just paint "T Birds" onto the back with tippex or white paint!0

The hippy look was still around in the early 70s. Tie dye some cheap white T shirts wear them with scruffy jeans and flip flops and lots of bangles and a headbandIt doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!0

Thanks for your reply.
They do have 2 white t-shirts and they both have black school trousers, my concern would be that the trousers are neither flares nor skinny leg? Do you think it'll matter? Maybe i could take them in a little to give a drain pipe look, was that the 70's? lol :rotfl:
I like the simplicity of this suggestion :T
I'm finding that the 60's & 70's are kind of mixing together when search for ideas for outfits.. flares or drainpipes, hippy's or rockers, not mention lots of Elvis or Abba!pinkpinkfizz

Get a pair of old jeans or trousers and cut up the outside leg seam and insert a large triangle of flower power material to make flares?working on clearing the clutterDo I want the stuff or the space?0

You could unpick the side seams of the trousers and sew in a triangle of brightly printed fabric to make them flares. That is what we all used to do when bell bottom jeans came in and our mums wouldn't shell out for new jeans when our old ones were perfectly good (Those were the days before Primark!!)It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!0

I used to do that as a student! :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl: Only about 10 years ago mind!

Hi there
Who do you know that might just have what you need - we have friends with a collection of daft wigs etc. Otherwise cheap or old jeans - open the seam and add in a triangle of contrast fabric - instant flares
does anyone have a flowered shirt - they were really on trend a few years ago - Jamie oliver used to wear them, or a big t shirt with a flower on it or a cheesecloth shirt. Otherwise sandles with the flares, hippie necklaces, headbands, wing collars, side burns.
I would beg or borrow -
Good Luck
