Getting Documents Certified

Hi,
Apologies that this post is in the wrong section - I didn't know where else to put it - but could someone please tell me where one can get a document certified as a true copy? I understand that solicitors offer this service but that it is very expensive.
Are there any other people authorised to certify documents as true copies?
Thanks

In the branch of the bank thats providing the mortgage can do it, they did for me at Natwest free of charge0 -
Thanks Spectre.
And if the document isn't related to a mortgage?
Thanks0 -
Okay, give us a clue.
What is the document?
Why do you require a certified copy?
What guidance notes have been provided?
Have you actually asked a local solicitor what the charge will be?0 -
As opinions4u alludes to, it may well depend on what document it is and what the guidlines say.
Many agencies requiring certified documents will accept a minister of religion, doctor, nurse, solicitor etc - that doesnt mean yours will, check what the guidlines say.0 -

Some banks will but expect them to want to send the documents on directly to whoever needs them rather than give you certified documents to send on yourself.0 -
If you have a solicitor acting in the transaction they will do this without charge. Otherwise they may well have a network agreement. "Just" certifying a document is a very dodgy area, as you are saying it is a true copy of the original, but if customs officers can't spot a forged passport how on earth would someone else?
(I am sure that yours isn't forged.)
One option might be to make a will with a local solicitor - about £100 - and they would probably certify the documents then without charge.0 -
I do this for people and charge £2.50 per document. You might find an FSA authorised broker near you.
I will certify that a copy is a true copy of the original as long as I see the original.0 -
we used to charge about £5 a copy when I was a solicitor - just ring up your local solicitors and ask.0

I paid a tenner last year to get my passport verified by a local solicitors firm not involved in my house purchase. It felt (and still does feel) expensive for what it was, but it was just one of a number of costs I had to pay.0
