We had this problem when we were living in married quarters years ago and were getting the house ready for inspection when moving out. Another Army wife said to rub VERY GENTLY with a Brillo pad soaked in (brown ) vinegar, leave it to dry, then polish it. It worked, but I suppose it would also depend on how dark the wood of the table is. It also worked when DD2 got thrush as a baby and we were treating it with Gentian Violet (probably no longer in use thanks to Canesten!) and some of that got spilt on the table!

    HTH - good luck.

Rub gently with "Brasso" or "Silvo" on a soft cloth. I've done this loads of times on different items of furniture with good results. It softens the original varnish, so don't rub too hard - it WILL work, and so simple.

My grandfather was a French Polisher all his life, and he used to apply methylated spirits with some cotton wool and then light it. Not sure I'd have the nerve to try it myself, and perhaps I shouldn't be recommending it to others - just in case!!!

As a flog it/bargain hunt addict I have often seen the experts recommend a paste of cigarette ash rubbed in.

Please let us know if you tried any of these "recipes" and whether they worked.

I once used toothpaste to remove the white bloom left on a table by putting hot dishes down with no mat underneath, it may work for scorch marks as well.
