Council Tax Help

Options
Hi all

i have just moved into my new 3 bedroom house in leicester and i was wondoring how much council tax i have to pay

according to the council website, the max i would pay is £784 (at the moment).

Do you get a discount if you are living on your own and if so, what is it roughly

if 2 people in total live in the property, would i still be able to get an discount as it is a 3 bedroom house with only 2 people living there?

Cheers

i think you get a 25% discount for living on your own - something of that magnitude....

lol - no you wont get a discount for "under-filling" your property - its not like a hotel supplement ;-)

well, its just another thing that council rip you off
  • Hello!

You get a 25% reduction if there is only one adult (over 18) living in the property. If there are two or more adults living in the property then you would pay full charge. There are certain circumstances where you could get a discount if there are two adults in the property like being a student, mentally impaired(!) and the list goes on.

I hate council tax!!! My bill said that both the husband and the wife are liable for council tax, but my wife is a SAHM and has no income. How is she meant to be able to pay a tax without any income??? Simple I have to pay it!!!

I would guess that a sigle persons discount is given because there is only one income. Yet we only have one income, but have to support more people and don't get the discount!

If she were a student/foreigner/nun and even a convict we'd get the discount - but not a woman staying at home to look after the kids!!

    Rant over....

We live in a Band A house and our Council Tax accounts for over 10% of our gross annual income. We don't earn enough to pay Income Tax or National Insurance. There are thousands of people like us paying this unfair tax.

I'd be VERY suprised if your Council Tax is only £784 as £807.64 is band A property.

it's a government tax collected by local authorities.
it's not the council's fault your band is wrong, blame the Valuation Office !!!!!

robindunne1 and izzwiz, if your income is as low as you make out then approach your local authority to claim Council Tax Benefit. There isn't any discounts for you because the discount/exemption system is not based on income.

Have looked at that and you would have to be earning really low salary to be elegible.

My main gripe is that all tax should be based on income - is there any other fairer way?
