ooo, my mom did me something similar for a birthday when I was younger.

How about the basics to start off with - Pins, needles, measuring tape, tailors chalk, few small spools of coloured cotton, and a large spool of both black and white cotton. I find poundlands quite good for starter or travel sewing kits though the pins are awful - very blunt.

You could add a few things for decorating clothes such as fabric paint, embroidery silks, iron on patches/gems (can find these in poundland as well), ribbons.

In Home Bargins they had some lovely sewing boxes for you to put everything in, think they were only £1.99 and the £1 shops do basic kits with loads of stuff in that could start you off, with different threads and needles etc..

A couple of pairs of scissors would be essential - a larger pair for cutting out material, and a smaller pair (embroidery scissors) for finer cutting. A pair of pinking shears is handy too, to stop seams from fraying.

Don't skimp with scissors, as cheap ones aren't always such a bargain.

lidl are featuring sewing kits next week i think - they had boxes of threads, needles etc, but what i'm going to pop down for is one of those wooden sewing boxes that fold out (my gran had one - hope you know what i mean) at £5.99
