Child Benefits/Support

Child Support.

Question. Why does the mother of my child entitled to FULL benefits yet does not have full custody. ie my Daughter is with me at least two nights/days a week, yet I can't claim for those 2 days.

You would have though she would be entitled to 5/7th's of child support and I the other 2/7ths, or is it expected that I don't need to spend anything on food/housing/clothing/education for her?

Another seemingly one sided frustration!

Not only that, your payment should be reduced to 3/7ths as she should contribute when you have the child overnight after all the cost of raising the child does not suddenly drop ;) Yes it is one sided but what can we do about it? :(

Because she has the child more nights than you do. Do you not get a reduction in your child support as your child stays with you for two nights per week? If not you need to be sorting this out asap.

She is. Your assessment will be calculated on a straight % of your income and then reduced by 2/7

So effectively you are getting 2/7 of the child support as your liability is reduced.

That's the maintenance - more than happy with that (well I'm not, I didn't do the dirty deed but hey ho!) it's for my daughter (you'd hope)

I'm talking about Tax credits and Child Benefits - they have nothing to do with me.
I don't get tax credits or Child benefit as I'm not the "main" carer.

Apply for full custody :) then you know all your money (and I mean ALL) is being spent on the child....chocolate stains are a nightmare to get out of silk mind but surely worth it?;)

After all, if you can't beat them then join then surely? :)

Correct. But it's a hell of alot cheaper to keep a child for 2 days than 5 hence help the main carer gets.

And if you're not happy then see the post above :)

 Perhaps it is too confusing working out tax credits/child benefit for those who aren't the main carer's.

I was tempted - and I'd have a good chance, have plenty of evidence and support showing that she's not the most ideal mother, but a big battle going down that route and statistically would still lose.

but it's the Child Benefit's that annoy me. i'm not entitled as I'm not the main carer- yet may need the support. Yet my ex gets the full amount for full residency when it's only a part week - more than a little unfair.

Why don't you ask her for £5.71pw then if it's bothering you so much?

    That's 2/7 of the £20pw Child Benefit

I think we are all aware that in some circumsatnce the system is far from fair.
