Question regarding Remortgage

Hi there.
My current fixed rate deal ends in 4 months time, and obviously need to consider my next move. I am married with 2 young children so obviously would like to look onto another fixed deal so that I know exactly what I am paying out each month rather than risking a sharp increase, not being able to get a good deal and affecting family life in the future.
My question is, even though I have 4 months to run on my current deal can I start shopping around for deals with other lenders now? I am aware that some lenders will hold an offer for you for up to 6 months, so for example say I found a new deal now, could the new lender hold it for me for 6 months (well 4 by the time my current deal expires) and then I switch over?
In my current mortgage (Halifax) I can start looking at their other products when within the 3 months.
Thanks given in advance.

Yes you can, length of offer validity will vary lender to lender.0
