Student claiming tax back?

in Cutting tax
My son is 21 and a full time student on a college (not Uni) course.
He claims the Adult Learning Grant and also has a part-time job which earns him less than £4000 per year. Should he be paying tax?
Im very out of touch with tax bands etc, so can anyone advise him if he can claim his tax back?

I'm not 100% sure about the Adult Learning Grant - I don't think it is taxable, but I'm sure someone will confirm or deny that.
Regarding personal allowances - the standard tax free allowance this year is £6475 so there shouldn't be any tax on his earnings.
If he is paying tax - get him to contact HMRC and they will issue a code for his employer, or at least explain why he is paying tax.
If he paid tax in the last tax year (ie before April 6th) he will need to claim it back from HMRC, by sending in his P60 and a covering letter explaining what he was doing through the year. He's not an accountant - he's a charlatan0
