Smokeless Fuel???

Hey all,

My OH and I and currently renovating our house and are in the process of opening the fire up. We have an endless supply of wood and peats from my parents however I have since been told that I would be unable to burn these as it has to be smokeless fuel only.

Can anyone confirm is this the case, and if so are there actually people who would patrol the streets to check that houses are burning smokeless fuel?! Or would you get away with burning peat/wood? I know at times we have certainly been out walking the dog at night and been able to smell peat in the air so some people are obviously burning it somewhere!

BTW we live in east belfast.

Thanks!

Smokeless fires have a different flu not suitable for blocks, ordinary coal etc. Although many years ago i lived in an estate that had smokeless fires and the people burned anything and everything without too much trouble. But no there's not a smokeless fire police.

No smokeless police, unless someone reports you. Yes it has been done where I live too. The stink and smoke coming out of a chimney, they burnt normal coal all the time. Told they would be fined if they did not stop.

Smokeless coals should only be burnt in a sealed fire as they give of very dangerous fumes, if your ripping out a glass fronted fire then to burn smokless you will need to replace it with a similar type. The only benefit from smokeless fuels are with smog, wood is in fact a greener fuel than smokeless coal hence the push with grants for wood pellet stoves etc.
