Actually you are completely wrong. I am a loss adjuster, so if everyone took health & safety as seriously as they should be, I would probably be out of a job!

You're not likely to be out of a job anytime soon then! What I was trying to say was that it would be possible for managers/company owners to spend ALL their time thinking about health and safety and writing risk assessments til they are blue in the face but who would do the REAL WORK! Everything in moderation and common sense is sorely lacking in many people which is the root of many accidents!

    Hey guys :)
Knee feeling a bit better, doesn't hurt when going up/down stairs, my Doctors appointment is on Thursday too.

I'm really annoyed at the attitude of our night manager who I hadn't seen for a few weeks. Bumped into him Friday and was 'greeted' with "tripped over any more pallets recently?". I replied no, there hadn't been any strewn about the production area. He told me I was lucky I didn't get called into the office over the incident :(

But this walking over (or on) pallets thing that some of you guys seem to think is a no no. It's impossible not to at some point & operatives have been doing it all week (I kept my eye open) I did it myself once without thinking, but my excuse is there was no room to manuvre around the empty pallet which was positioned between two production lines & was about to get used.

We've got several members on a Health & Safety committe who meet every so often, maybe the pallet problem will get mentioned, I doubt it though, as there are other issues which have been brought up & abandoned (leaking urinals, smelly water pipes) It's taken them 3 years to realise they need a night cleaner to help keep hygiene standards high during the busy night shift.

Anyway, thanks to everyone for their thoughts :)

Just because it has become practice in your company, doesn't mean it is a good thing.

The company should do what is reasonably practicable to ensure the Health Safety and Welfare of its staff, and indeed customers. If they can show in a court of law that this practice was reasonably practicable and a risk assessment had been done and the risk was minimal, then I imagine they would be left off [should it ever get to that stage]. As a member of staff, you have that requirement to bring it to the H&S committee's attention - otherwise you have failed in YOUR duties under the H&S@Work Act.

Glad your knee is getting better, but I daresay before this gets sorted some other accident will have to happen that scares the company a little bit.

    Hello everyone

I hurt myself at work a few nights back (Thurs 11th) :( I'm so annoyed about it and don't know what to do. I don't know if it's my own stupid fault.

Whilst working on my machine in the food production hall, I was walking over an empty pallet to get to a supervisor to hand a form in. I didn't see that this pallet was broken, (missing planks) because there was a sheet of pallet paper laid out on it (hygiene purpose). If I remember rightly, the pallet was left there by the machine operator on the line next to me - for my use later. Anyway, my foot went through the gap in the pallet and I fell over, banging my knee. I got up, rubbed myself down a bit and got on with everything, just feeling a bit raw on the legs but trying not to show my embarrassment, thankfully I don't think many people seen.

I was okay until I tried getting out of bed on the Friday afternoon. I couldn't bend my left leg properly without a sharp hot pain.

At work on Monday night, I grabbed my friend who is a first aider & we filled an accident form in. I've worked all week and hated it, I somehow managed to get all the the jobs that were difficult to do. Whilst walking isn't a problem. getting up/downstairs is painful, as is just picking things up off the floor.

Mum said get compensation but they might fire you (thanks Mum)
Shall I go to the Doctor? what if he gave me a sick note? I've never had sick pay before, if it's like Job Seekers Allowance, I can't afford to have it. Shall I just get on with it, the pain might disappear.....It's sore now actually and I'm only sat typing  It feels hot, throbbing a bit.

If this pallet was in a designated walkway you have a case.

If it was in a storage area for pallets or anything else where you should not be walking, its your own fault.
