in Cutting tax
Hi - My Husband started a new job in March and even though he gave them his P45 from his previous job he was taxed in March, April & May on emergency tax.
He has just received his June payslip which thankfully is now at the right tax code but we thought he'd get the excess tax (about £100 per month) paid back as well?
Does he need to claim this tax rebate from the tax office or should it be done through his payroll?
Thanks.

Not for March as that is previous tax year, but for April and May he should. However that won't be separated in the payslip. How do you know it wasn't? can you disclose the Gross pay and the tax paid?
Are you sure he is back on normal code and not on week1/month1?0 -
He cannot possibly have been on emergency code for April and May as that is the start of the tax year, so his employer knows his full pay for the year, so E code is not necessary.
I wonder if you mean code BR and that he has now been put on E code? But I wonder why? I think he needs to cntact his payroll dept for an explanation as they have his full records for the year.
For 08-09 he will need to send his P60 to his tax office to ask for a refund.£705,000 raised by client groups in the past 18 mths :beer:0 -
He started in March and gave them his P45 from his previous job but they didn't process it until 2 weeks ago so for March, April & May was taxed on the full amount (code BR) and had no tax allowance at all.
This month he has a tax code (647L) - his gross pay is the same as it was for the previous 3 months (£1675) but his take home was £100 more (£1276 this month £1176 in March, April & May).
So by my workings this month is right but we are owed money for the previous 3 months.
Have just looked at his payslip for June and it does say Month 1 - what does this mean in relation to the tax he has overpaid?xxx Nikki xxx0 -
That means, that the tax paid for last few months had not been brought into the calculation - and that is why you didn't get that tax back.
As Fengirl said, he shouldn't have been on BR for April and May = that sounds like the payroll department have no idea what they are doing. Or does your husband have another job?
I suggest you call the payroll department and ask whether the code and Month 1 had been supplied to them by Inland Revenue or whether they just realised their mistake. It looks like they've lost the P45 and only just found it. Still have no idea what they are doing though... Ask them details.
If that is the case, then call Inland Revenue (well, your OH needs to) and ask them to amend the tax code to normal tax code and send the coding notice to the employer.0 -
Thanks Guys - to be honest his payroll dept is pants!! You wouldn't believe that it's a big national company he works for!
He's going to give them a call on Monday and if no luck then he's going to contact the tax office to find out what's going on - he's contacting them anyway because he overpaid about £400 of tax in 08/09 so hopefully we should get that back!xxx Nikki xxx0 -

save yourself a phone call on monday, don't call HMRC , they are in the middle of changing computer systems so won't be able to help you for another 2 weeks. No codes are being issued at the moment. He's not an accountant - he's a charlatan0 -
Cheers Suso - could this be why his code is Month 1?xxx Nikki xxx0

Nope he's on month one because it sounds like the payroll department is pants.
They have put him on month one basis because the P45 is from last year and they will say that they don't have tax details for this year. (I know he has worked for them for the full tax year, but from reading your posts they seem not too bright)
There is the chance now that they have should have sent off a copy of the P45 to HMRC, that HMRC will issue a cummulative code so any tax that has been overpaid since April 6th will get refunded through his payslip.
But HMRC are effectively offline until july, so they will not be able to confirm they have rec'd the P45 as info is at least a week out of date.
Regarding last year.
Fengirl advised to send the P60 in, if you call HMRC they will advise you to do exactly the same. P60, covering letter asking for a refund, and details of all employment through the year. (P45's etc,) if theres any gaps in employment just explain what he was doing (claiming JSA or not earning etc.) so they have a full record of what he was doing through the year, if there are any gaps they will write asking for details thus prolonging the process.
One good thing regarding the new system HMRC are changing to, is that each year a tax calculation will be done, so in the case of your husband overpaying last year, they would automatically issue a refund once the various companies submit their PAYE details for the year. He's not an accountant - he's a charlatan0 -
Thanks - have written the letter and found the documents he needs to send in.
Have worked out he's due about £600 back altogether so I suppose we can look at it as a way of saving!!xxx Nikki xxx0 -
Nikki, please do take photocopies of the documents before you send them in.Official DFW Nerd Club - Member no: 203.0
