I wanna test for kidney infection?

Hi, i think i might have a kidney infection of some kind and can't get an appointment with the doctor for ages. Does anyone know if you can buy a test in any shops? I know you can get them online but i need one today! Do Boots or any chemist sell them?
Thanks.

  • Is there any chance you could turn up to see the practice nurse taking a sample with you? They might not be able to see you there and then, but if you stress the urgency they might test it when they get a chance and let you know the outcome?

    It's only a game

You really need to get this looked at ASAP - its an urgent appointment you want ring up on the day and go in that day. Or by this itme on a Friday try an NHS walk in centre - kidney infections can be tested from the urine for proteins and then they will feel the kidneys to check if its spread that far - I've had antibiotics from them for it before - they are usually open till 8pm or if not try a minor injuries unit at the hospital (its not A & E but they can see you asap - prepare for a wait though ;)).

Please get this looked soon - this can get nasty if left untreated!
  • MrsBartolozzi is right, you may find you don't actually need to see a doctor.

You may find that there is a Practice nurse that could run a Urinary Tact Infection test and also write a prescription for you.

My partner went last week for the same thing and only saw a nurse who stuck at test strip in the urine sample (take one with you) saw she had an infection and supplied the anti biotic.

As per previous posts, don't leave it, try and see a doctor/nurse as soon as you can.

I got a very bad urine infection a few years ago (wasn't looking after myself, wasn't drinking enough) and I ignored it for a few days even though I was in agony. I couldn't pretend I was ok any longer and my dad ended up taking me to the A&E where they did tests and gave me antibiotics there and then (hadn't got to the kidneys, but was a bad infection).

I'm quite bad at not drinking enough and since then have had to go to the doctors twice as it came back (not as bad) and recently thought it was back again, but seemed to 'flush' it out!

Hope you get it sorted, they're not nice :(

If you have a kidney infection (and I've had one - agony!) and you can't been seen by your Drs then get off to A&E. You will probably have a long wait but you need to been seen asap. You could also try requesting an emergency appointment at your Dr's stating why you think you need to be seen so soon.

best advice is drop a sample at your GP surgery and get nurse to test for proteins and ketones.

Don't go to A&E - what a waste of resources! Your GP should see you, if not there should be a local Walk In Centre or evenings and weekends there are out of hours doctors. Be persistent but don't waste A&E resources for a urine infection - we are doing lots of work in the community to reduce people going to A&E so there are options before going there.

You just reminded me many A&E run GP clinics so they would re-direct her there........
