VAT debt

Hello all, I have been trying to post this for a few days but I get so far and start that sick feeling that this is really happening, I knew it was going to happen but still hoped it would not.
My oh has a large VAT bill which has been very much disputed and appealed against over the last 15 months, but now they want payment
My oh has offered £300 per month, but all we get from VAT are forms to fill in regarding our assets. They will not accept our offer of payment.
My oh have spoken to the VAT and it seems to us that they will make him bankrupt so I need to know a few things before they do this.
Would it be better for oh to go bankrupt rather than VAT man do it.
If VAT decides to send in bailiffs would we get any warning of this happening.
I have read a few posts where poster have had tax or vat problems so any help would be very appreciated.

I'm no expert by a long shot, but if VAT is from a business try to see an Insolvancy Practioner (initial consult is usually free) for their guidance. We contacted a recommended local accountant and they have IP section.
