Moving to Durham

I will be moving to Durham soon and was wondering what it's like in terms of places to live. Planning on renting for six months and then maybe buying somwhere - what are the best value areas, posh bits, places to avoid etc.. How about the surrounding villages?

You may find a bit of a dearth of rented accommodation at this time of year - students!

Long time since I was there, and since I lived in college I'm not a lot of help, but it's a lovely city.

Posh : St Oswalds, North End, Whitesmocks, the Downs, Rosemount estate, Ackley Heads
Nice;): Merryoaks, Newton Hall, Crossgate Moor
Ok: Belmont, Carrville, Pity Me, Nevilles Cross
    BAD: Gilesgate, Framewellgate Moor

    Surrounding villages:
    Nice: Brandon village
Ok: Langley park, langley moor, Witten Gilbert
BAD: Bear park, Ushaw moor, Meadowfield, Brandon, Sacriston

Hope this helps your search......can't think of a lot worse than moving into the 'wrong' neighbourhood....

Lol, shouldnt these all be in the BAD section (no offence to anyone living there!!)
 I love my gorgeous little girl
  • Durham is a focal point for the surrounding villages.Twenty plus years ago the young lads from the various pit villages used to hit the town on the weekend and regularly end up in fights. Student bashing was also popular. I suspect times have moved on somewhat but I don't think any great prosperity has been showered on the same villages over the last quarter of a century.

As for housing, then what do you want ? You can spend money but detached 1970's 4 bed places with decent gardens are sub 250k. The problem areas are the poor areas and council estates. Apparently there is a congestion charge nowadays but Durham ain't no London for sure.

Would add Shincliffe village (as opposed to High Shincliffe) to the 'posh' category.

Durham city is unlike any other city in the UK really : In broad generalisations there are many people born after the collapse of industry in very close quarters with those who are a tad more silver spoon; I used to live opposite 'The fighting cocks' [The irony] in the centre of town and during the day it was delightful. At night it got a bit rowdy to say the least.

Hangyour head in shame. Durham is one of the finest cities in England.
The people in Durham are one of the friendliest in Britain.
And no, i dont live there. i live in North Yorks. They are a very close second to Geordies.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

I agree with this : there's always peace to be found in walks etc

Thanks for that, these were the places I was looking at, especially Ushaw Moor. Looks like I might shove the period terrace idea out the window and end up in a new build flat.
