We are just starting out, this is our first home together (unfortunately decorated in late sixties and hasn't seen a lick of paint since, e.g. brown bathroom suite with matching tiles, lovely:j)
Have you tried cleaning it :rotfl:A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effortMortgage Balance = £0

Can I just say StuartGMC, you sound very smart and sorted! The ahem, retro, if you want to be kind, decor I can live with at the moment until OH gets another job as it ain't broke, it's just bloody ugly! However on your advice StuartMCG, I will be keeping an emergency stash for when the freezer decides it's had enough of being one of electrolux's first models and maroon in colour (I kid you not, the last residents of our house must have taken some strong drugs in the 70's, I mean just what exactly did they have against the colour white?)
You may well find that freezer will last much better than modern units; switching from CFC compounds is better for environment, but, as a chemist I can't understand why this should reduce reliability.... as we've found recently.
Surely the '70s are back in now (or next month) so you'll be ahead of the trend?0 -
PP, What rate are you going to be paying on Nationwide's SVR when your fixed with them finishes? My SVR, since coming off their 2 year tracker in March is 2.5% (a very good deal!). If this is the same for you, wouldn't you be lots better off directing the overpayment to the other big one?Predicted Net Worth 31/12/2018: -£38,898.03/-£34,616.86Target 31/12/2019: -£25,000Extra Income 2019: £1,500/£732.38Target Weight Loss 2019: -14 LBs/-2.5 LBsAs at 3/4/2019 MFiT-T5 No 490

Hi - I normally lurk and read other posts too but just wanted to say good luck! Like you I also have two mortgages - a big one which is just mine for £160k on a flat which I now rent out and a much smaller one for £85k with my partner. For the purpose of my overpayments I am concentrating on the big one because it is just my debt and so it gets to a level where the rent covers the mortgage - at the moment it doesn't but on the other hand it does pay the mortgage on the new flat!
Good luck with your house - I've just ripped out a beige and brwon suite from my flat adn the kitchen units were covered in brown sticky back plastci - must have been a Scottish fad!

My SVR should be the same as yours, 2.5%. Ultimately I know that I should be trying to clear the larger mortgage as I pay more interest on that one. However, purely for psychological reasons a) £43K seems a lot more 'do-able' than £112K and b) and this probably should be a bigI detest my work. It is a hideous place with institutionalised bullying etc. In every other job I've had the people I've worked with have been lovely, so this is a bit of a shock to the system. Unfortunately I'm the main wage earner so I can't walk away from it with my OH about to be made redundant and I'll probably need to take a lesser paid job (but would hopefully be trading for a less stressful life). The plan is to get rid of the 43k mortgage, then mean we could afford for me to take a different job. Obviously this is all dependant on there being any jobs out there!
Well moaning over, this is the first month we have tried to live on one wage and all ready I'm panicking that we're going to run out of cash!
Oh's wages have been moved into savings and if we make it through the month, it'll go to paying off half of the car.

Hi Penny pauper,
First of all welcome to MFW board but be warned - You will soon be addicted!!
Have you checked the OS Board... I don't know how much you spend on the Groceries per month but I have been able to reduce my monthly grocery spend by taking advice from there...
