Diary of sunshine_shell and her hawks MFW journey!

Hi Everyone!!

On the 1st of August i will become the very proud owner of a beautiful house and i wanted to set up my MFW diary ready so here is the story so far.....
  • I currently own a flat that is on the market at the moment and waiting to sell this is where my and hawks (my lovely bf) live
  • Sadly last november Hawks' beloved nanna passed away leaving hawks some money
  • we then decided to buy our dream home without waiting to sell the flat.
  • Thanks to Nanna Hawks, Hawks himself and my dad we have a deposit of 46k
  • we then realised we will have lots of mortgage to pay off!!!
  • we currently owe 80k @6.39% on my flat and we will owe 142k @4.20%:eek::eek:
I made Mr Hawks read the MFW forum because at first he didn't see the point but i got him looking at the egg calculator and he is now with me!! So i now need to find a fab money box and get ready in preparation for the long journey we are about to go on!!

Thanks for reading

Best wishes with selling the flat and moving into the house too. Have you broken down your plans across your personal aspirations (career, learning, voluntary roles) plus your overall financial plan (mortgage, saving, investments and pensions) with mile stones at 3,5 and 10yrs hence?

Break down each topic and then chip away in small portions so you can measure progress. If you have a detailed household budget spreadsheet then you'll find the other aspects all fit around that better and you can review and revise as necessary.

Great to hear that you are both on-board for this journey, but remember to include some enjoyment along the way for the marathon that is the MFW route. I look forward to reading more as your diary progresses.
  • To be honest i wouldn't know how to do a spreadsheet, i've used Martins budget guide to work out stuff, though i won't be able to do anything in detail until i've set up the D/Ds for the new place and reduced the flat ones, as we will still need everything ticking over there as well. I'm using Moveme.com to help with planning everything, Hawks is trying to be helpful, but he works away alot so he has a list of jobs he can do while he is in the road :)

As others know, I can send you a household budgeting spreadsheet. If you'd like a copy then contact me via PM (personal message) to send me your e-mail address and I'll send the spreadsheet. Don't be too phased by it though, just make a copy and put in some simple test data to see how it works then start with a clean copy again for your real data.

Good luck with your progress. I assume you've looked at keeping the flat and renting it out - now is not the ideal time to sell?
A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort
    :) Mortgage Balance = £0 :)

  • I can't rent the flat, my mortgage lender won't let me do it without changing to a buy to let which would cost me the tie-in fee and arrangment fee of about £3000 and i don't have enough equity in it to get a decent LTV deal. The rent wouldn't cover the mortgage:mad:

I think i'll just have to take a hit
  • Good, well i say 'good' news i've sold my flat, not for what i wanted to it covers the mortgage and the tie in so i'm happy about that. Still looking for a fab money box!!
