Company director search for non-limited company

Options
I've been trying to find out who owns a private school called "The Academy" in London NW3 and have spent a fair amount of time and money online so far (but don't have subscriptions to everything so maybe someone can help).

The problem is they are what creditgate.com refers to as a "non-limited company" (Companies House say this probably means it is a partnership - could also be a charity maybe?)

creditgate.com gave me information for free, including confirmation of their address in Pilgrim's Place, London, NW3 (and this is the address of the school) but the only report I have been able to buy just gave me a number (B2773531) without any directors/shareholders details. And this number is not recognised by Companies House.

Can anyone help? Confusingly there IS a limited company called "The Academy School" (company number 6617622) but they are in Kennington, south London (I paid more money to find this out) and are probably not connected with the people I am looking for (haven't filed accounts so far in any case).

Many thanks, Geoff

You might get a bit more information from their last Ofsted inspection report. http://www.ofsted.gov.uk/oxedu_reports/download/(id)/75084/(as)/131291_299778.pdf

It does give the proprietors names.

It they are a charity then they should be registered with the Charity Commission, which might give you more information.

If they are a non-limited company then, yes, they are most likely a partnership, but Companies House only holds details of limited companies so they won't be able to help you. There is no requirement for partnerships and other similar private enterprises to release details publicly (ownership, annual accounts, etc) on a central register in the same way.

The reference number that you got from Creditgate is probably just their own reference number.

You may find this interesting (scroll down) : http://www.optima4design.com/pdf/gsg.pdf

School was started in 1997 by Garth Evans BA and Chloe Sandars.
  • Very useful replies - many thanks everyone. But when two people say they have "started" a business, and that they are the "proprietors", it remains unclear as to what is actually going on. Since the same two names keep coming up, it's probably a 50/50 partnership - but one doesn't really know. Nor is it clear what the assets are, if any.

    Me too!

I'm afraid if they are a partnership, they would be under no obligation to tell you anything about it as it's all private detail. Accounts, partnership split, etc are not available for public record unless they decide to release them, and that's up to them. Whether it is a 50/50 split or not ultimately doesn't affect anyone but them anyway.

By your reference to assets, I'm inferring that you're potentially might want to sue them (but I'm willing to be corrected on this if I am wrong...) If so, the partnership split would be irrelevant to you. Any legal documents served on a partnership would make all partners jointly liable.

Ultimately, if you did want to be sure who owns it and whether it is a partnership or not, could you not ring them up and ask them and see what they say? (Although they'd probably want to know why you were asking...)
