wedding invites - how much to charge?

Options
Hi,

My GF has been asked to do the wedding invites for a neighbours wedding.

It's going to include

60 day invies
200 evening invites
60 menus
probably place names & seating plans etc. etc.

How much would you charge for this?
200 invites online seems to cost around £500!!

I guess the materials won't cost much but it's going to take a lot of time!

Any advice or if you can tell us how much you paid for yours would be helpful.
Cheers,
worto.

Sorry, this is probably more questions than answers...

But is it 60 in the day and another 200 at night so = 260

or 60 in the day and 200 at night so 60+140=200 invites?

Each person doesn't need a menu, its normal for several people to share (1 or 2 per table)

What about orders of service/order of the day?

Save the date? Thank you cards?

Also do they want to hand write in the names or have them printed?

A lot of it depends on the style and how much labour is involved. Also how much do they want to spend? If they have a small budget then they would be better having them done with vista print or similar as the labour involved with handmade cards should be relected in the price :)

Thanks for that, we'll need to ask her some of thise questions.

60 people in the day too - I guess a lot of those will be couples\families which will only need one invite between them, the same goes for the 200 at night too.

So before we decide anything we need to find out :-

exactly how many invites - not how many people?
    how many menus?
if she wants save the date cards?
if she wants thank you cards?
    hand written names or printed?
orders of service\order of the day?

    Thanks,
    worto.

I would also find out what sort of style she wants...As scruffs says it may be easier to use vista print but if she wants a relatively easier design may not be as bad.

Alternatively you could ask her what the budget is and arrange it around that?

Thats not a bad way round to do things I guess if we let her set the price my GF won't feel guilty for overcharging.

She gets asked to do a lot of things like this (crafty stuff, catering, paintings) and gets so worried about the money side of it she ends up doing it for just over cost most of the time even though it's taken up loads of her time to do the work.
  • Are you going to the wedding yourselves? If so, maybe this could be your gift to them. That way you avoid the uncomfortable charging conversation, you don't have to buy a gift from the (probably) overpriced wedding list and it's something really personal to boot.

I make and sell wedding stationery

Most of my stuff is aimed at vw enthusiasts (or nutters as we like to call ourselves lol)
So I do personalised stationery, with illustrations of either their cars or the cars being used for the wedding
I usually do them as a bride and groom...but have done many other different designs for people (ie a bride and groom waving from a camper etc)

I do the new designs for free (even tho that in itself takes a while)
then I charge dependent on qty
so just a few invites are £1.50 each, but over 100 are £1 each
this is a layered design on the front of the card and then printed message inside....but they write on the names themselves

this probably isnt enough money if you work out how much time it takes and then give your self a basic hourly rate. But the way I see it is that it covers costs and gives me a bit of pocket money while keeping me busy of an evening :)

I also give discounts when people have other things too

I know how expensive all this stuff can be so always try to accomodate people budgets

im another crafty person so I get asked to do all sorts of things
I know what its like to be worrying about pricing (I find paintings are a nightmare to price..Im sure I never charge enough lol) all you can do is work out how much it will actually cost you and then how much she wants for her time and then give them the price......at the end of the day they dont have to go with you :)

also the suggestion above is a good one.....if you are going to the wedding why dont you do all or part of it as your gift to them

still lurking on the wedding board tho :rotfl:
