Devon - where have the haberdashery shops gone?
Options
We used to have a few in central Plymouth, but now just a craft shop in Tavistock is all I can find. There isn't even a little department in Dingles any more!
All I want is to be able to walk in, choose from lots of cottons, get a new sewing machine needle and buy decent fabric scissors when I need them, without the palaver of online ordering and so on. I like picking these things up and choosing that way!
Are proper haberdashers a soon to be extent breed, I wonder?

I think they've been a dying breed for a looooong time!
Do you have any markets selling fabric? they might also do threads.
And sewing machine shops, might be worth looking on Yell.
Also (what I think of as) the posher dept stores - House of Fraser, John Lewis, if they have a dept selling fabric for curtains.
Getting fabric is hard too.Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
Our market stall doesn't do threads, only a limited range of fabric - there is probably a good argument for setting up a stall myself!
Unfortunately House of Fraser in Plymouth did away with their department and the nearest John Lewis is a good 2 hour drive away... oh well, I'll have to start hunting for a decent online store I suppose. Thanks anyway!0 -
There's a shop in Plympton that might be what you're looking for.
'Jenny Wren Crafts' 107 Ridgeway, Plympton.
It includes wool, craft and haberdashery items. What's more, there is a free public car parking within a 2 minute walk of the shop. Hope this helps, Sharon0 -
I had forgotten about this thread, but the reminder is timely - are you ever anywhere near Bovey Tracey? There's a wool shop there but they have a good range of threads and buttons alongside the wool and knitting needles. They also do lunches, I believe. Spin a Yarn.
Although Plympton's probably more convenient ... here's the link for Jenny Wren's.Signature removed for peace of mind0 -

When I did textiles GCSE (ok, a long time ago!) we had a fantastic craft/haberdashery shop called Busy Hands....unfortunately, crafting wasnt popular and it went out of business...of if only it would come back, it was an Aladdins Cave....!0 -

I'm fairly certain that there's at least a couple of fabric stores in Newton Abbot that sell this kind of thing, as well as two well-stocked craft shops.0
