Tipping home hairdresser

Hello,
I have my hair cut at home, which saves a small fortune, but don't really know what to do about tipping. At a salon you can discretely put in a tip in their little box, but obviously at home you can't do that and I feel a bit awkward when it's time to pay. What do other people do?

I have a home hairdresser too who does my hair and the kids and I agree - it saves me a small fortune! It is more difficult to tip but I tend to round up to the nearest £5 (or add a few pound coins if the additional would be less than 10%) We always have a little fight about it - she tries to give it back and I say how much I save compared to salon. Its like a little routine now lol.
I also make sure I give her a little something at Christmas (from the kids really) so she knows we do appreciate her.

Yep, I round it up to the nearest £5 too.Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0

I have a home hairdresser who charges odd amounts, e.g £9 for a cut, which i round up to £10. I always put a tenner in her Christmas card to show my appreciation, she saves me a fortune over the year0

Mine charges £10 too which I think is very expensive to be honest, so I don't tip her at all. She charges approx £2 more than they charge in the salon she works in. I now look at it as a convenience rather than a money saving exercise.0

I pay £5 for a dry cut, £10 for a cut and blow dry and £25 for a cut and colour. I don't tip because I am doing her a favour - she needs the extra money. In the salon they charge £18 for a cut and £49 for a cut and colour but she gets minimum wage so she's already better off doing mine at home - dry cut takes 20mins if that. I normally go to her house as it's nearer work but if she comes to mine - 18 miles round trip I give her an extra fiver.A very busy Yummy Mummy to a 1 year old gorgeous boy :smileyhea
Where does the time go? :think:0 -
I have never ever tipped my hairdresser, in a salon or at home.
the only time I do tip is if we have good service in resturant and that doesn't happen very often.I have a gift for enraging people, but if I ever bore you it'll be with a knifeLouise Brooks

£5 for a dry cut? £10 for a cut & blow dry? Can I have your hairdresser???
How cheap is that!!! Very MSE!
My home hairdresser is my niece, and she is very very good. I would never ever insult her by giving her just £10 for a cut and blow dry. I know that the salons that are any good charge at least double. Could be just the area that I am in, or that as we are down South it tends to be dearer... just don't go into London! You'd be shocked at the prices there!!
Yes, we do have a tussle at times - I just shove the money into the bottom of her bag and push her out the door....Genie
