No market locally. I try to shop in places other than the supermarket, but as my "corner shop" is a little Asda, that's where the majority of my top-up shopping happens. Not many other food shops locally - a Waitrose, a little shop called "cooltrader" (like a cut-price Iceland, good for stocking up on various randoms like junk food when DD can not be fended off any more, sugar, instant coffee, and 2l milk for 99p) - and no butcher, no baker, no candlestick maker.

Well, actually, we do have a baker - two of 'em, in fact. No use to me, though - I bake all my own.

How about because everything I buy from there goes off within two days or less. And some of the things aren't even any cheaper than the supermarket.

Just because your local market is good, doesn't mean they all are. ;)
just because you get a rotten tomato from tesco/waitrose/asda does it stop you going back.....i used to deliver for a firm called jpmo. jersey produce marketing all of there produce comes off of a boat straight on to a lorry there are no stickers on the pallets to say where they are destined for it is just luck some go to to asda some go to waitrose/tesco or where ever they are told some go covent garden ...if you persistently get this type of produce then they are buying close to the date gear or they are not selling it all the day before and they are using your local market to rid the previous days stock.....i can probably find you the best local market for you to buy your produce and enjoy the day out if you are interested:T

I used to happily buy our fruit and veg on the market, we are a family of 8 and love fruit in particular so I would spend £15 plus at a time... then the stall changed hands and instead of 3 or 4lb apples for £1 you get a plastic bowl full, same with pretty much all the produce - bizzarely including fresh ginger, huge amount! - so t buy what I need would be an absolute fortune and often the quality is a bit hit and miss. It is a shame but I don't want to shop like that and can't afford to spend the money then have to chuc it all and re-buy.
can i be so bold as to ask where your local market is as i may be able to recommend somewhere better or as to what time you would normally go to this trader to purchase your fruit and veg:j

There is a good market about 3 miles from my work every thursday - I used to work 300m from it and then I shopped there.
Unfortunately I have to go to work so I never catch opening hours.
Our local shops (goods looks like from the market) are soooooo expensive that there is no way that
a/ I am giving up my Saturday for shopping
b/ I am spending that amount of money
    so what do you do:eek:

We only have a farmer's market once a month and it's really expensive! Mostl of the stalls are different meats - venison, specially smoked salmon etc, the veg is much more expensive than supermarkets. I do concede it might be nicer or fresher, it's not cheap and that's what this thread is about.
I will admit you are correct in what you say but i am actually talking about your local street/indoor market :T:rotfl:
