food shopping savings

No market locally. I try to shop in places other than the supermarket, but as my "corner shop" is a little Asda, that's where the majority of my top-up shopping happens. Not many other food shops locally - a Waitrose, a little shop called "cooltrader" (like a cut-price Iceland, good for stocking up on various randoms like junk food when DD can not be fended off any more, sugar, instant coffee, and 2l milk for 99p) - and no butcher, no baker, no candlestick maker.
Well, actually, we do have a baker - two of 'em, in fact. No use to me, though - I bake all my own.0 -

Just because your local market is good, doesn't mean they all are.0 -
I used to happily buy our fruit and veg on the market, we are a family of 8 and love fruit in particular so I would spend £15 plus at a time... then the stall changed hands and instead of 3 or 4lb apples for £1 you get a plastic bowl full, same with pretty much all the produce - bizzarely including fresh ginger, huge amount! - so t buy what I need would be an absolute fortune and often the quality is a bit hit and miss. It is a shame but I don't want to shop like that and can't afford to spend the money then have to chuc it all and re-buy.0

There is a good market about 3 miles from my work every thursday - I used to work 300m from it and then I shopped there.
Unfortunately I have to go to work so I never catch opening hours.
Our local shops (goods looks like from the market) are soooooo expensive that there is no way that
a/ I am giving up my Saturday for shopping
b/ I am spending that amount of money0 -

Mostl of the stalls are different meats - venison, specially smoked salmon etc, the veg is much more expensive than supermarkets. I do concede it might be nicer or fresher, it's not cheap and that's what this thread is about.0
