Graduate Loan (Barclays)

I have been banking with Barclays for around 12 years now. Got an overdraft of £1500 with them which is used but up to date, all green 0's.
Got some late payment markers from about 16mths ago.
I've just finished Uni and not found a job yet. Great times.

I'm wondering whether Barclays will accept me for a graduate loan, when I've found a job?
I don't think I'd be able to apply until July time anyway, as that was the time specified on the Uni proof I gave to Barclays on transferring my normal a/c to a student one. I don't actually graduate until November, but in their eyes I'd have finished by July.

Any feedback from people in a similar position would be great :D

Or if not Barclays, who else is worth a try?

The loan would be to consolidate a CC debt of under a grand, clear my overdraft possibly, cover some cosmetic dentistry and enable me to buy a newer car.

  • I have a Barclays graduate loan.

When I applied, it was a nightmare. I needed it to pay off debts to college...without which they wouldn't let me graduate. Barclays said that I needed to have graduated before I could get the loan.

So, without the loan I couldn't graduate, but without the graduation I couldn't get the loan.

In the end their fudged it - I think now you can apply provided you are within 3 months of graduation (e.g. now for September grads).

I think you do need a guaranteed job offer though.

Thanks, did you have any adverse on your files like late payment markers at all?
  • No, nothing adverse there.
  • I'm with Natwest, and just got a graduate loan.

I don't finish my course until september, and my graduation is not until december.

I do have a job contract to start in september though. I went to see my "graduate manager" and she was able to twist the system and give me a graduate loan of £2000 (even though ive still got a student account).

I have gone over my overdraft quite a lot (but not in the past 3 months) and missed a couple of credit card minimum payment.

The key thing is that you need a job offer. If you have that and go and see your branch in person then you should be able to get your loan

Thanks very much Daragh! Hopefully I'll get a full time job offer soon, then I can apply for the loan :D
