No Tax Return

Tax man has just written to me - saying that they dont intend to ask me to do tax return in the future.

Over the past few years I have moved a number of things around in order to simplify my tax life (savings in ISA's, consolidating savings and cheque account etc) but I'm a High rate tax payer and I get a number of benefits form the company (notably car and health insurance).

Has anybody got any comment on this as the last thing I want to do is to find that I get a "check" and they suddenly find that I owe them. ???

Check your own tax situation at the end of the year using the inland revenue software. If you think one then needs to be submitted, you can do so even if they dont request it.

Slight correction - not "you can do so" - in fact, you are legally required to do so if you have any untaxed income or are liable to higher rates of tax.

As I understand it what the Inland Revenue are trying to do are remove some people from Self Assessment to ease the burden on the taxpayer and probably themselves. People who are higher rate taxpayers whose tax can be collected entirely through their wages will no longer be sent a tax return.

Some people with be sent a 'tax review form', with the view of possibly changing your tax code to collect tax due or refund tax to you. This will be those with simple tax affairs, say tax on savings interest or personal pension contributions relief.

You are perfectly entitled to tell the Inland Revenue you want to continue completing a Self Assessment form if that is what you want to do.

It sounds to me as all your tax affairs are dealt with through your wages, thus there being no need to fill in a tax return.

  • I have a sneaky feeling that I will ask to fill in a return - especialy as a number of benefits have gone down in value and the wages will be lower next year.

There seems to be a natural assumption that wages go up :( but its not always the case (and my emplorer has a "funny" view of the rate of inflation)
