A1 Services
I'm not sure in what thread to post this forum, but I have to travel from Kent to Newcastle on Sunday and back on Thursday. I am going up the A1 and wanted to know the best places to stop and have a rest/ eat a meal etc. Am travelling with 2 kids, so will need several stops. Are there any supermarkets right on the A1 e.g. Tesco with restaurants. Or any good places to eat. I realise it won't be extra cheap, but want some hints of places to stop to look out for. Its the first time I have ever driven this journey since my husband died, so am a little daunted.

there are lots of motorway services to stop at that have a variety of food to choose from although it is usually quite expensive. I usually make something to eat to take with me and only use services to go to the toilet or to have a coffee and strech my legs. Maybe you could just make food to take with you and stop at the services to get the kids a magazine and use the loo.0

5 minutes away is one place to look!
The problem with supermarkets on a Sunday is that they're not open 24 hours. And even when they are open, the cafes may not be open 24 hours. But if you can catch them at the right times, this does save a fortune! I'm regularly doing Bristol to Warwick, and the discovery of a Morrisons at Tewkesbury has saved a fortune! But the time we got there too late for food, we went to one of these 24 hour motel chains we'd just passed and it was very pricey. Next time I'm going to brave the pub ...
Best of luck! There's a travel board if you want to look for hints on long journeys with children.Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
Thanks for the 5 mins away link, I'm going to find it really useful0

Tesco just offshot the motorway in Durham, but you'll not be far from Newcastle then, so i doubt it'll be a bit too late

Don't know about the OP, but when mine were young we seemed to need services both just after leaving (for the inevitable "I need to do a wee-ee-ee" and just before arriving - mine had a habit of up-chucking five minutes from our destinations! :rotfl: Knowing about Tesco in that situation could be useful if you haven't got spare clothes with you - of course for a few nights away you would have, but going out for lunch you might not ...DjSatansfury wrote:Tesco just offshot the motorway in Durham, but you'll not be far from Newcastle then, so i doubt it'll be a bit too late
