American Express Default Notice letter

I wrote to Amex Customer Services recently to propose a token mimimum payment as I am in financial difficulty. I have now received a default notice letter from them threatening debt recovery action. The letter was not even signed so I do not know who I am dealing with. I would like some advice as to how to respond but I would also like a name and address of a person at Amex to write back to.

Make the token payment whether they accept it or not. If you put a payment arrangement in place (and honour it), it severely limits their legal options. When done, inform them that you have a payment arrangement setup and give them the details.

    Good luck! :)

Have now received the above letter saying the balance is payable in full and that the account has been transferred to a debt collection agency. A collection fee has also been applied to the account but they don't specify the amount. Wanted to speak to a named person in Credit relations, Customer Servcies in India could not help and gave me another number to call. I was told this was a UK number but I actually was routed through to Quala Lumpar! They were unable to transfer me to the named person so they took a message asking them to call me. Has anyone had dealings with debt collection agencies?

'Has anyone had dealings with debt collection agencies?' Ho ho ho! Yes many of us have - so you are not alone. My problem with the dca was resolved very quickly but then I dealt primarily with the creditor rather than the dca.

Can you try any of these numbers?

Remember to note the name of each and every person that you speak to from American Express, including the date & the time.

I would also try these people for advice:

I used to work for Amex (filing and scanning new apps and correspondance) and the general consensus, no matter what someone suggested it was full mimimum payment, full balance or debt collection agencies. They are based in brighton and you can find a few brighton numbers on their website, I'm not sure if defaults are still dealt with there, they were in my day. Good luck with it.
