For a 4 year old I would definitely go for a cheap (but working) used PS1 or PS2 with a few appropriate games. I personally think the screens are too small on the handheld consoles for much more than about 15 minutes of use with out a good break.

Also, I wouldnt let a 4 year old play for more than 30 mins in any one day. I have twin boys at almost 12 years old who have had consoles now for the last 5 years and they can discipline themselves now and only stay on for maximum of 1 hour at a time with a break of an hour inbetween. But you have to lay the ground rules right from the start and stick to them. It is too tempting to let them carry on playing when you have things to do and they are out of your way but believe me, it pays off to be a nagging mum and make them stick to the rules.

I would make sure he or she understood the rules before purchase.

P.S. I'm not that strict really, just like the house to run smoothly for all involved !!
