Sorting out my tax code

I'm waiting for my new code from IR for 09/10 as I've been on BR since beginning of the new tax year (thanks to a !!!! up by my employer). Well, since before then, but I'm on to the reclaim for 08/09.

However, I'm now losing my job. I know how long it takes the IR to sort these things out. In the meantime, I imagine my employer will issue my P45 with the BR tax code on it. I don't want to carry this forward to a new employer (if I'm so lucky). Would it be best to ignore it and ask to complete a P46? Also, can someone remind me if the new tax code is sent to the individual or the employer.

yes, tell your new employer that you have lost your P45 or something and sign a P46. The employer then operates 647L week 1. The new code is sent to both the employer and employee. Once you start your new job, you could try ringing HMRC and giving them details of the new employer and see if they can issue the new code to the new employer without you having to write to them.

I've tried "ringing the tax office" in the past and given up all hope of getting any response !!!

Would my new employer be able to take the coding from the notification that I receive?

No, they are specifically forbidden from doing this. At least 647L wk 1 is better than BR.

Thought that might be the case. Agree, 647 is better than BR for now.

In a way I'm glad to be leaving this job as I seem to have to write to the IR at least three times a year due to payroll errors with my tax coding. Never in my favour!!!

I find that strange... My OH rung his tax office on the beginning of the month in regards of his company car which has been withdrawn and new tax code landed on our doorstep on Saturday.. Try again, I am sure you will be O.K.

Or is the problem that your employer is not changing it? I mean you receive the notice but your payslip still shows the old one?

If that is the case i would go for the P46 form with new employer. But the IR system will catch up soon and change it from Wk 1 to normal 647L

Maybe you were lucky but usually I get the recorded message saying they are really busy, then get cut off. I think on one occasion I got through I was told to write in anyway.

My tax code has been wrong for various reasons:

    - my personal pension contributions not taken into account
    - my office expenses counted as taxable benefits
    - payroll losing my P45 so putting me on emergency tax without telling me

Everyone out there, please take care and check your payslips each month, so many slip-ups can occur.

I deal with payroll and cars on daily basis and I always recommend leavers to advise IR that they are no longer on company car - so far they always sorted it out within days, so please try again.

To be fair, the pension, the office expenses and the P45 seems like payroll department's mistake rather then anything else, so it seems that your company has no idea what they are doing and it's very good job you are leaving for new job.
