in Cutting tax
Hey all,
I have been emegency taxed since Oct 2008, and I have followed the advice from helpful people on here, and from HMRC's website, and have written to my local tax office to reclaim overpayment enclosing P45/P60's etc.
They have sent an "Employment Record" form back asking for me to complete it for jobs from 17 June 2008 onwards. Basically I worked in Job A for 5yrs, took 4month career break on 17th June 2008, returned to Job A in Oct 2008, then left Job A for Job B in February 2009.
One of the jobs I had during this time was as a camp counsellor in the USA. This was for 10weeks starting June 20th 2008 for which I earned a total of US$850. I did not receive a payslip for this time (it was through Camp America).
When I wrote to reclaim I put in covering letter detailing Job A/Career break/Job A/Job B scenario., but did not mention that I worked abroad for 10weeks as the man I spoke to at HRMC did not think it was relevant.
Do I need to put this job on the form I have been sent to complete?
If so, it asks for £ in income per week for employer. How do I convert the US$850? Do I use todays exchange rate or last summer's?
I then travelled for 5weeks after camp so do I put this down as 'not earning'?
Thanks in advance for any replies, I'm very grateful.

As you remained resident in the UK while you worked in the US, the US income does need to be shown on the form (p91?). You need to put down your earnings in US$ and HMRC will convert it using the average exchange rate. You need to also include the time you spent travelling. Make sure all your time for the year is accounted for.£705,000 raised by client groups in the past 18 mths :beer:0

Yes it's a P91 form.
Thanks Fengirl, I'll post it back tomorrow

I had a similar situation with going abroad for a short period...and they sent me a gap in my employment sheet to fill in and today I got a tax refund through in the post (though not 100% sure I am entitled to it - but hopefully the fact i declared everything is enough?)0

If you declared everything thing, then yes you are ok, if you are unsure post your earnings up and someone will do a quick calculation.
If tax was paid on the earnings abroad then it may not be due over here under double taxation agreements. but it depends on the country and rate of tax paid etc. He's not an accountant - he's a charlatan0
