Came across this - did a search and doesn't look like has been on before.
Haven't tried myself but looks like may be worth knowing about.
Many train operators offer compensation if your trains are delayed
The London Underground offers a full refund for your journey if you're delayed by 15 minutes or more.
TrainRefunds is a completely free service for commuters who are tired of poor performance and late running trains.

I'm not sure if this site is still active. I was registered with them but haven't received an email alert about train delays for quite a while now, and all the news on the site looks quite old. Tell me if I'm wrong - maybe I need to re-register or something. Another one I came across recently was 'train delays' (I can't post the link, being a newbie here, but if you run the two words together and add .co.uk then you're there).0

Two things:
1. It's not a freebie as it requires the purchase of a train ticket.
2. Compensation varies by operator and is usually in travel vouchers unless you experience a 3hr delay that was the fault of the rail operators i.e. not poor weather, vandalism etc. London Midland offer travel vouchers for a 30 minute delay, while with Northern Rail you'd get nothing for a 59 minute delay.0 -

IIRC Northern Rail will compensate you if your total journey - as opposed to their train - was delayed by one hour or more. So if their train is delayed by only half an hour but you can show you missed your connection as a result ....
I have actually claimed when I've had to run to catch the connecting train.The travel vouchers are valid for a year, and usually worth half the journey (quarter of a return) so it's well worth claiming for a long/ expensive journey.

But it's worth noting that Northern Rail's terms and conditions for compensation is exactly the same as National Express East Coast. So a 7 minute delay to a London to Edinburgh train meaning you miss your connection in Edinburgh and have to wait for an hour gets you the same level of compensation as a 50 minute delay on a Hazel Grove to Stockport journey (usually 10 minute journey time.)
However, almost all operators pay above the minimum they have to pay (25% for 60 minute delay.) Merseyrail seem to be the only operator to pay compensation at the minimum level, despite their service being the most frequent outside of London.0
