Question about claiming expenses

Can I claim for tools and laundry of clothes etc. I'm not self employed but in the past i've claimed a flat rate expense for these items of say £100. I can't find antwhere on the online tax form to enter this. I thought the amount was an agreed trade union thing. Does anyone know if I can still claim this anywhere please?

People who are not self-employed do not usually fill in self-assessment tax forms unless they have extra income to declare. Employees usually write to HMRC and get an adjustment to their tax codes. Thanks for your reply. I have to fill in a form to declare additional income and also a benefit in kind. I'm sure I can claim a fixed rate allowance for my trade, I just don't see a place for it on the online form0

Go to the HMRC website and search for fixed rate deductions. If your trade is there, then thats the amount you enter on the SA. It goes in the expenses and professional fees section on the employment page.£705,000 raised by client groups in the past 18 mths :beer:0

Thanks Fengirl. I found my trade under the "Trades ancillary to engineering". I've realised that by the way you answer certain questions you get different pages afterwards. I'd entered no to the "have you had any expenditure that you've not been reimbursed for" question. I've changed that to a yes and I now have the box to fill in. Thanks0
