just a bit of showing off really, but was incredibly impressed with what we manged on Friday... - just thought I'd share it...

It started in Sainsbury's on Fri evening.. 3 ribs of beef, 3.3Kg, original price 12.49/kg, full price, £41.22

It was the end of the day so they'd marked it down to £16 for the whole thing. openly hummed and 'arred for a bit and offered them £3.50/kg (£11.55) They accepted.. big grins all the way around the shop...

When we got home Mrs Beaker then comes into her own with her sharp knife.. and this is what we've done...

1x full rib for Sunday lunch today.. yum yum.
2 days of sandwiches using the left over from this for me too!
5x inch thick rib eye steaks.
outer rib meat them chopped and put in the freezer to make..
2x large steak pies or stews
ribs bones and left over cut bits put in saucepan with some herbs and boiled for 3hrs to make 1.5pints of beef stock.

like I said, just felt immensly proud of my new money saving!!!!

anyone else do similar???

(edit: Mrs Beaker says 'all he did was buy it, I did all the hard work!!')

Excellent! :T I do stuff like that with big joints, although I usually roast the whole thing first then use leftovers creatively. I never get such a good price though -well done you;)

    Hey thanks thriftlady!!!

We often do this, but not the extent of the beef joint..

we never buy cheap crap meat, but just make sure the good quality stuff we do buy goes as far as possible.

edit: I onyl really thought about bartering in saisburys the other week when the bloke on the cheese counter was trying to shift a whole load of St Agur (I love that stuff!), and offered me the whole lot at a rediculously low price (and we're talking pence per lump!).. I then thought, hang on, so they're obvisouly empowered to do this, so as long as I remain friendly, and don't take the !!!! it seems to work well..

(note: I'm a long time lurker around here so i know there are threads on this specifically! - just my own experience!)
