    I remember signing something to say I was happy for DS1 to be working there, which I don't remember doing for DS2 and he WAS 17 when he started.

    Somewhere there's a list of what you can and can't do at different ages. Link from this page. From which it appears that as the OP's son is over school leaving age he CAN work at a cinema, but the cinema may have their own restrictions.

    My ds has just been on mcdonalds website and they are advertising quite a few area vacancies and you apply online.

    HAs he tried the coffee chains? The staff turnover is massive in most of them, so they're normally hiring. I believe Pret is the best, but ofcourse the hardest to get into...

    I second McDonalds - they tend to pay a smidge over minimum wage and he can do loads of hours in the holidays then switch to just evenings and weekends in term time.
