DWP contracts - is this wrong?

I was called two weeks ago and offered a job with civil service (DWP).

I applied for some south london districts, for a job that paid around £18K

I get a contract today, saying the job is not London weighting allowance, so I am only getting £14,700

Surely this must be wrong? Don't zone 3 jobs get covered by London weighting? I can't afford to live on this!

It doesn't sound right, London weighting is paid in offices based in some areas of Kent so is certainly payable in Zone 3, where have you actually been placed, maybe its not where you think it is?

I don't want to say the exact office, but it is an SW postcode and zone 3. It is 5 miles south of Charing Cross.

Maybe London weighting just doesn't show on the contract?

I believe London weighting for inner London is currently £4k, outer London is £2960. Roughly Inner & outer London definitions are 5 miles from Charing Cross (King Charles statue) for Inner & 18 miles from Charing Cross for outer London. There are other definitions for some area's such as St Albans, but they won't be applicable to you.

It seems likely the London weighting hasn't been included as part of the salary as it's something that's paid in addition to the basic nationwide salary.
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.

That doesn't sound likely to me, there are seperate salary scales for London based employees, its not paid as a seperate amount, I would expect your contract to show the full London salary, its more likely someone has just copied it out wrong, particularly if its come from Newcastle!

Yes, London weightings were consolidated in Govt pay some years ago and a zone 3 job would (I am almost certain) be considered 'inner London'. It's just a mistake. Don't worry OP, it'll get sorted. Just query the contract with the pay office.
